Multiple uses of kombucha

Kombucha can be used as a hair wash – Kombucha is an acidic drink which makes it part of the
vinegar family. Just like vinegar, Kombucha can be used to remove product build-up in your hair,
restore your hair’s natural PH balance and detangle and nourish your hair. Give it a try!

Kombucha can also be used as everyday vinegar – Kombucha can be used in cooking exactly like
one would use household vinegar.

Kombucha can be used as a facial toner – Due to Kombucha’s natural PH balancing properties, it
can be used as a rejuvenating facial toner that can assist in restoring the skin’s natural beauty.
Add another ingredient, like aloe vera, and make a Kombucha aloe toner!

Kombucha can be used as a cleaning product – Let’s say your Kombucha has been standing too
long and is too acidic-tasting to drink? An easy and effective alternative use for the Kombucha
would be to dilute it and use it as an alternative to harsh household cleaning products. Add it to a
spray bottle and use it as you would vinegar for cleaning!

The scoby
The sugar feeds the yeast and bacteria that form the SCOBY (symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast) layer – the thick,
mushroomy layer that rests on the top of the Kombucha. The Kombucha SCOBY can be eaten, the texture is somewhat
squid like with a light and fruity and slightly sour taste. Eric Childs, the founder of Kombucha Brooklyn prefers not to cook
the SCOBY but rather cube it and use it in pasta or salads. Cooking kills the live probiotics in the culture.

Kombucha couture
If you are interested to read more about Kombucha Couture you can read
about Sacha Laurin whose career as a professional cheesemaker has taken her from fermenting milk with bacteria and yeast to fermenting green tea with SCOBYs and transforming the growing “colony” into live clothing and fashion.
Kombucha Jewellery and Couture are unique creations and Sacha’s love
and expertise in the alchemy, science and art of cheesemaking crossed
over into a passion for understanding the Kombucha culture and how best to
develop it as a sustainable fabric that could be used in haute couture and everyday
clothes.

Microbial Bio leather
A New York streetwear label Public School collaborated with a material scientist Theanne Schiros to create a pair of bio fabricated trainers using a leather alternative. And yes, the entire trainer, including the upper, midsole and laces was produced from a symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast known as a SCOBY – the key ingredient in making kombucha tea.
This substitute leather has up to 97 % lower carbon footprint than
synthetic polyurethane leather. The trainers made from microbial bio-leather has a lifespan of several years, but it remains compostable and will break down over a couple of months in a domestic compost heap.
